Sunset Hosts First Chess Match
The Sunset Chess Team hosted their first tournament on March 18th with the help of All About Chess. There were a total of 193 participants coming from 62 different schools and the Sunset team came in 2nd place overall winning their first chess team trophy. Staff said they were proud of the effort. 24 students from Sunset participated in the event, with 8 players qualifying for the State championships on April 29 where they will compete with over 1000 other students from around the state of Washington. Cristina J. went undefeated in her group getting a score of 4.5 out of 5 and finished 2nd place in her division. Other notable performances were Niranjan P. who got 4 out of 5 points and placed 3rd in his section and Oliver R. scored 4 out of 5 getting 4th place in his section. Special recognition to Min Y. who played in her first tournament as a Kindergartener and qualified for State against other Kindergarten and 1st graders. Also qualifying for the State Championships were Asher A., Jin Y., Anash K. and Haani V.
